ELIJAH SAUNDERS, MD, FACC, FACP, FAHA, FASH
December 9, 1934 - April 6, 2015

The Consortium for Southeastern Hypertension Control™ (COSEHC™) mourns the loss of one of the most eminent experts in the field of clinical hypertension and a champion in bringing to the forefront the medical needs of African Americans. A committed supporter of our organization, Dr. Saunders was Professor of Medicine and Head of the Section of Hypertension in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. Saunders’s devotion to the elimination of disparities in the treatment of cardiovascular disease was based on his personal trajectory through years of restricted opportunities for African American physicians. He became the first African American resident in Internal Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1960 and the first African American cardiologist in the State of Maryland in 1965. Dr. Saunders’s tireless clinical and educational activities were complemented by his efforts in the advancement of newer opportunities for African American physicians. He was a founding member of the Association of Black Cardiologists, a member of COSEHC™ Board of Directors, Past President and Founder of the International Society of Hypertension in Blacks and the Urban Cardiology Research Center, Inc. Those of us who were blessed with the opportunity to be his friend will miss him enormously. But his legacy will remain vividly in our minds as a humble tribute to his memory and a renewed commitment to abolishing health disparities.
